Getting Your Yard and Home Ready for Spring

"Spring is the time of plans and projects." — Leo Tolstoy

Ah, spring. That special time of year when nature awakes from its winter slumber and all things are renewed again. There’s just something special about spring and that feeling when you step outside and see the first new leaves or flowers and realize the life all around you is about to pop again.

With spring officially upon us, consider the following tips and ideas to help prepare your yard at home for this beautiful season.

 Let In the Fresh Air

For months now, many of us have been cuddled up inside with the heater and/or fireplace to keep us warm. Now that spring has sprung, try opening up your screened windows to let in fresh air. The circulation is good for your home and it’s also a good time to tackle the chore of cleaning windows, inside and out. Enjoy this open window weather because, before you know it, summer will be upon us and we will have to close them again.

 Flowers and Greenery

Spring is definitely the season of flowers. A great way to add a splash of color to your home is the addition of new flowers and other greenery. Confirm which kinds of plants grow best in your region and look for colors that complement your home. This could also include a small outside garden and even something as simple as a small house plant or herbs on a well-lit windowsill.

 Clean the Gutters

The new season also means rain, and you want to make sure your gutters are clean and clear when it comes. You can time the arrival of spring with a reminder to clean out those cluttered gutters because it’s no one’s favorite job, but it’s an important one.  Grab your gloves, secure your ladder and clean out the dead leaves of fall to prepare for the Spring season.

 Smoke Alarm Inspection

Spring is also a great time to ensure your home smoke detectors are working properly. If they are battery powered, switch out the old ones for new. If they are hardwired to your home, press the test button to make sure they still work. Even smoke detectors hardwired to the houses electrical system typically only work around ten years.

These are just a few ways and ideas for getting your yard and home ready for spring. It’s a beautiful time of year so make the most of it!
