Scams to Avoid in 2023
January 12, 2023
The changing calendar hasn’t changed criminals’ determination to take your hard-earned money. However, their schemes keep changing with the times. Keep an eye out for these new-and-improved scams trying to trick you in 2023.
Fake Weight Loss Products
There are plenty of websites out there claiming to have the magic solution to weight loss, but many are run by fraudsters overpromising results to try and get your money. These products will be a waste of money at best and poisonous to you at worst.
You can spot fake weight loss products by noticing unprofessional websites, unrealistic promises like “no diet or exercise required” or stock photos beside testimonials.
New Scam Emails
Criminals are trying new things with their scam (“phishing”) emails, too. They’re sending victims emails disguised as document signature requests. If you click on the attachment in the email, it downloads a virus to your computer.
Avoid phishing scams by checking the sender’s address for wrong names or gibberish words. Take the time to think as well. Phishing emails rush you to act because they usually don’t make sense. For example, a document you had to sign wouldn’t come by surprise. You’d be expecting it.
Malicious Apps
Apps are useful for achieving your 2023 goals, whether that’s organizing your information or investing. Sadly, some criminals make fake apps to infect your phone with viruses and steal your account passwords. These apps could even copy well-known, legitimate apps.
Doing research on the app developer and the app’s reviews should help you find out if it’s fake. The information you find for fake apps will either be too vague for comfort or very negative. Downloading apps from a legitimate app store rather than an unverified website will help protect you, too.
You deserve a great 2023, so we hope these tips help you beat the scammers and protect your money this year. Have a Happy Scam-Free New Year!
